26/02/1979 - Cape Breton Post - New Waterford. Aplhonse
Berger, 60, of 413 MacKay Street, New Waterford, was
pronounced dead upon arrival at the New Waterford
Consolidated Hospital on Saturday. A native of Stellaarton,
he was the son of thelate Mr. and Mrs. George Berger, and
resided in this area the past 10 years. He was a member of
the Jehovah Witnesse. Mr. Berger is survived by his wife the
former Theresa Dupe, one daughter (Louise) Mrs. William Hall
of Edmonton, one sister (Georgina) Mrs. Alexander Crawford
of New Waterford, and by three grandchildren. The body rests
at the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home 380 Smith Street, and
the funeral services will be conducted in the Chapel THesday
at 3:30 p.m. with Richard Volkes officiating. Interment will
be made in Union Grove Cemetery.

Coish: The funeral of the late William J. Coish, New
Waterford, was held Wednesday, May 23, 1973 from the V. J.
McGillivray Funeral Home in time for services at Calvin
United Church at 2 p.m. Rev. R. Feltmate officiated.
Pallbearers were the six sons of the deceased: Clarence, Jim
Cyril, Eddie, Tom and Murray. Burial took place at Union
Grove Cemetery where Rev. R. Feltmate offered prayers at the
graveside.

11/07/1994 - Cape Breton Post - SCOTCHTOWN: Ryan Kevin
George McNamara Copan, age two months, of 34 King St.,
Scotchtown, died Monday, Nov. 07, 1994 at home. Born in
Sydney, he was the son of Kevin McNamara and Arlene Copan of
Scotchtown. Ryan is survived by a brother, Matthew at home;
his maternal grandparents, Lucy and Louie Copan, Scotchtown;
and paternal grandparentss Gail and Robert Samuel, New
Waterford. He was loved and will be greatly missed by
several aunts, uncles and cousins. He was predeceased by his
paternal grandfather George McNamara. A prayer service will
be held in V.J. McGillivary Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New
Waterford, Wednesday at 10 a.m. with Father Bill Rankin
officiating. Burial will be in the Union Grove Cemetery,
Scotchtown.

25/07/2005 - Cape Breton Post - Joseph Roy Cousins 81,
SCOTCHTOWN, N.S. "Promoted to Glory to be with his Lord whom
he served" It is with great sadness that we announce the
death of Joseph Roy Cousins, who passed away suddenly, July
21, 2005, at the Carbonear General Hospital in Newfoundland.
He was the son of the late Joseph and Blanch (Mugford)
Cousins. Roy, worked in 12 Colliery until his retirement in
the early 1970s. He was a avid outdoorsman, enjoyed
gardening as well as many trips back to Newfoundland. He was
also an active member of the Salvation Army of New
Waterford, up until his death. He leaves to mourn, wife
Doris (Jewer); son, Melvin (Jean) Cousins, Scotchtown;
daughters, Frances (Patrick) Doyle, New Waterford, Lynn
(Darren) Meery, Scotchtown; sisters, Marie (Charlie) Brown,
Houston, Texas, Gladys Bursey, Newfoundland, Viola Boone,
Newfoundland; and brother, Brymer (Violet) Cousins,
Newfoundland; as well as six grandchildren, Starlette,
Jason, Darlene, Patricia, Michelle, Amanda; three
great-grandchildren, Taylor, Caleigh, Chloe; many nieces and
nephews; and one special niece, Nancy (Gordie) Hibbert. Also
special nephews, Barry and Ward; cousins and families. He
will be fondly remembered by a large circle of friends and
relatives. He was predeceased by his brothers, James and
Clarence Cousins. Visitations will take place today, Monday
2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at McLellan Brothers Funeral Home, 3183
Plummer Ave.,New Waterford. Funeral Service will be held
Tuesday, July 26, at 11 a.m. Salvation Army Citadel with

It is with deep sadness, that we, the family of Frank Daix
Sr., regret to announce his passing after a courageous
battle with cancer. Frank died peacefully at home with his
family at his side.
‘Da’ was born in Scotchtown and resided in New Waterford
with his cherished wife of 59 years, Pauline (Faye),
formerly of Dominion.
Frank was a loyal and devoted father, grandfather and
friend. He enjoyed auto mechanics, carpentry, playing
guitar, horseshoes and watching a good game of hockey. Frank
had a reputation as a tireless worker, building his own
house and working as a coal miner for forty years in Glace
Bay and New Waterford. Frank began his lifelong friendship
with his God, Jehovah in 1957 and was baptized as one of
Jehovah’s Witnesses in 1962. He fondly remembered pioneer,
Frank Pokornick’s kindness, patience and encouragement in
helping him uncover bible truths. Frank will be remembered
for his faithfulness and strength despite much adversity
throughout his life. He boldly spoke to all he knew and met
about the trust he had in the bible’s promises for the
future of a time when there would be no more pain, sickness
or death (Revelation 21: 3,4). His hope rested in the
“Resurrection”, where he longed to be reunited with his
daughter, Emily. (John 5:28, 29)
Frank was predeceased by his mother and father, Gus and Mary
(Pastuck) Daix; by his maternal grandparents who raised him,
Frank and Emily (Fukula) Pastuck; paternal grandparents,
Steve and Mary (Barton) Daix; daughter, Emily; sister
Virginia (Tootsie) MacKinnon and son-in-law, Wayne Scott.
Frank is survived by his wife Pauline (Demeyere); daughters,
Mary (Terrence) LeBlanc, Glace Bay, Marcella (Mike) Bennett,
Glace Bay, Sandra (Myron) McNeil, Glace Bay, Velvet (Scott),
Irricana, AB; sons, Frank Jr. (Dorothy), Sydney, Gus
(Carmen), Birch Grove, and Daniel (Marjorie), New Waterford;
grandchildren, Michael (Virginia), Mark (Dallas), Tammy
(Jonathan), Eugenia (Brad), Jason (Deanna), Frankie Jr.,
David (Cella), Matthew, Daniel Jr., Carlene, Josh and
Richard; great-grandchildren, Brandon, Mitchell, Ryan,
Keith, Felicia, Kelsea, Dax and Cale.
Cremation has taken place. Burial will take place at Union
Grove Cemetery in Scotchtown at a later date.

New Waterford
The sons, daughters and grandchildren of Jessie Marion
(MacLeod) Detienne regret to announce her passing on Dec. 4,
2008, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney,
surrounded by her family. Born in New Waterford, Jessie was
the daughter of the late Neil D. and Isabella (MacDonald)
MacLeod and was the last surviving member of her immediate
family. Jessie was a member of Calvin United Church and in
her younger years belonged to the UCW. She enjoyed gardening
and sitting on her patio in the summer. She also loved
spending time with her grandchildren, who were her pride and
joy. Surviving are her two sons, David (Linda), Wayne, both
of Dartmouth; three daughters, Lorraine (Mickey) MacDonald,
Arlene Detienne, both of New Waterford, Brenda Detienne,
Dartmouth; grandchildren, David (Jaralin) Detienne,
Vancouver, B.C., Julie Detienne, Dartmouth, Jennifer
MacDougall, Red Deer, Alta., Kristopher and Meagan
MacDougall, New Waterford, and Jason MacDonald, Halifax.
Jessie was also survived by several nieces and nephews. She
was predeceased by her husband, George, sisters, Isabell
MacDonald, Mary Mitchell, Jean Sedore, Christina MacLeod,
brothers, Donald, John Dan, Murdoch, Norman, Charlie,
Allister and Calvin and Robert in infancy. Visitation will
be held today, Saturday, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at V.J.
McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford.
Funeral service will take place 3 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 7 at
Calvin United Church with Rev. Duncan Roach officiating.
Interment will follow in Union Grove Cemetery, Scotchtown.
Jessie's remains will be taken to the church at noon Sunday.

Helen Amelia Madeline Verge (Hutchison) Faraci passed away
after a courageous battle with cancer, on Sunday, May 31,
2009, at her home in Nestleton, Ont. at age 44.
Helen Verge was an amazing woman and was truly loved by all
who knew her. Born and raised in New Waterford with her
grandparents Thomas and the late Helen (Jacobi) Hutchison
who were father and mother to her.

A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held in the
All Saints Anglican Church in New Waterford, on Friday July
24, 2009 at 3 p.m. with Reverend Fred Ryhmes officiating,
also participating will be long time friend Reverend Joan
Griffin. A luncheon will follow downstairs in the church
hall immediately following the service and interment will be
in Union Grove Cemetery Scotchtown Funeral arrangements are

26/02/1979 - New Waterford. Robert Forsyth, 66, of 3647
Emerald Street, New Waterford died Saturday at the family
residence. A native of New Waterford, he worked 42 years in
the coal industry reitring from No. 12 Colliery. He served
with the Royal Canadian Navy and was in the Normandy
Invasion during the Second World War. He was a member of
Branch 15 Royal Canadian Legion, and at one time served on
the executive. A son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Robert
Forsyth, he is survived by his wife the former Catherine
MacLellan, sons Robert of Pictou Co., Charles residing in
Ontario, one daughter (Beth) Mrs. Bernard Boudreau of New
Waterford, two brothers, Adam of Margaree Forks, Hugh of New
Waterford, and by seven grandchildren. In lieu of flowers,
donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society. The
body resting at the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith
Street, will be removed to Calvin United Church of which he
was a member Tuesday at noon with the funeral services to be
conducted at 2 p.m. Interment will be made in Union Grove
Cemetery.

20/08/1968 - New Waterford - Charles Fraser, age 84, of 207
Mahon St., New Waterford, died at the New Waterford
Consolidated Hospital early Sunday morning. He was widely
known throughout the community and his death will be mourned
widely. Mr. Fraser was born in Whycocomagh and moved to his
community in 1909. He was pensioned from No. 12 Colliery a
number of years ago having been employed there for some time
as check-weight-man. He was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs.
Charles Fraser and was a member of Calvin United Church. He
is survived by his wife the former Charlotte Higgins, one
son, William of town, two daughters, Marjorie (Mrs. Jerry
Murphy), Halifax and Mary (Mrs. Roy Cummings), Alberta. One
son, Steward, died six years ago. The remains will repose at
his late residence at 207 Mahon St., New Waterford. Funeral
will be held Tuesday with private service for the family at
11 a.m. The remains will then be removed to Calvin Church
until funeral services at 2:30 p.m.. Burial will take place
in Union Grove cemetery, Scotchtown. Rev. D. K. MacLeod will
officiate.

- Kenneth D Fraser, well known resident of this town, passed
away Wednesday night at the New Waterford General hospital.
Born at Boularderie, C.B. he was 76 years of age, and had
resided in this town for the past 18 years. Surviving
besides his wife are five daughters, Mrs William (Bella)
Brewer, Mrs Sidney (Christine) Tucker, Mrs Robert (Mary)
Hart, Mrs Vital (Sadie) Culeller, and Mrs Lauchie (Cassie)
MacLean, Inverness; two sons, D S Fraser and Austin Fraser,
and an adopted son Leo; also two step daughters, Mrs Jacob
Milley and Mrs John Roberts and three step sons, Edward
Garland, Glace Bay; and John and Joseph Garland, New
Waterford. Also surviving are four sisters Mrs Edward Moore,
Pleasant Bay; Mrs Dan MacLean, Inverness; Mrs Duncan
MacDonald and Mrs Sadie Campbell; and four brothers, Rory in
Pleasant Bay; Dan Fraser in Brooklyn, N.Y.; John in New York
City and George Fraser in Inverness. SCOTCHTOWN MAN IS LAID
AT REST New Waterford, June 6 - The funeral of Kenneth
Fraser was held Saturday afternoon from his late residence
in Scotchtown, and was attended by a large number. Services
at the house were conducted at 3 pm after which the funeral
cortege went to Calvin Church, where further services were
held. Among the hymns sung were, "Abide With Me", "What A
Friend We Have In Jesus" and "Rock Of Ages." Interment took
place at Union Grove cemetery, Scotchtown. Pall bearers were
Sidney Tucker, John Fraser, John Garland, James Wilkie,
David Wilkie and Dan MacDonald. Mr Fraser died Wednesday
night in the New Waterford General hospital, after an
extended illness. Seventy six years of age, he was born at
Boulardarie, and had resided in town for the past 18 years,
where he enjoyed the esteem of a wide circle of friends. He
leaves to mourn, his widow, five daughters, Mrs William
Brewer (Bella), Mrs Sidney (Christine) Tucker, Mrs Robert
(Mary) Hart, Mrs Vital (Sadie) Cubeller and Mrs Lauchie
(Cassie) MacLean, Inverness. two sons, D S Fraser and Austin
Fraser, New Waterford, one adopted son, Leo; two step
daughters, Mrs Jacob Milley and Mrs John Roberts and three
step sons, Edward Garland, Glace Bay; John Garland, Glace
Bay and Joseph, New Waterford. Also surviving are four
sisters, Mrs Edward Moore, Pleasant Bay; Mrs Dan MacLean,

- Word was received by relatives Monday of the death of Neil
Fraser, well known New Waterford resident which occurred in
the D.V.A. hospital, Montreal, following a lengthy illness.
The deceased was born in Cape North 51 years ago and was a
resident of New Waterford for the past 35 years. He was
employed at No. 12 colliery and was active in U.M.W.
circles. He leaves to mourn his widow, six sons, Thomas,
Neil, Donald, Alex, Harold and Roddie, three daughters,
Shirley, Janet and Marina. A twin brother Murdoch Fraser of
New Waterford also survives and a half sister, Mrs. McLean,
residing in Saskatchewan. The remains will leave Montreal
this evening accompanied by his son Roddie who was with his
father at the time of death and will arrive in town Thursday
night. The funeral will be held from his late residence at
20 Victoria street with arrangements to be announced later.

14/12/2004 - Cape Breton Post - Ann Gerow of Ocean View
Blvd, New Waterford, 63, passed away suddenly on Monday
December 16, 2004 at home. Born in Sydney, and a long-time
resident of St. Peter's, Ann was the daughter of the late
Burge and Rachael (MacLeod) Ross of St. Peter's, CB. She
will be remembered as a very pleasant, quiet, and easygoing
woman, who had a great sense of humour. Ann had a great love
for aminals, especially horses and also loved walking. It
was hard to gor through New Waterford without seeing Ann
walking the streets. She is survived by her companion,
Edward J. Hewer, three sons Carl (Leslee) of Sydney,
Allister (Cheryl) of New Waterford, and Lennie (Adrienne) of
Halifax, also several brothers and sisters and
grandchildren. Ann is also survived by her best friend from
the boulevard, Mary MacMullin. She was predeceased by her
parents, a brother and sister, and grandson, Ross Gerow.
Visitation will take place on Wednesday from 2-4 & 7-9
pm with funeral service at 11 am on Thursday all in the V.M.
McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith Street, New Waterford.
The service will be officiated by Pastor Andrew Regich of
the United Pentecostal Church in Sydney. Interment will take
place in Union Grove Cemetery, Scotchtown. If so desired,
donations may be made to a charity of one's choice.

LITTLE BRAS D'OR passed away peacefully in his 93rd year at
the Northside Hospital on Wednesday, April 27, 2005. Born in
Bridgeport, N.S., Harry was the son of the late Frederick
Gregor and Jean (Murphy). He was a successful businessman,
an avid bowler and enthusiastic sports fan. Harry was a
strong supporter of Calvin United Church, New Waterford, and
St. Andrew's United Church, Little Bras d'Or. Surviving are
his wife, Margaret L. (Howatson); sons, George, Richmond,
B.C., and John (Ellen), Marion Bridge; daughter, Jean
(Wendell) Hennan, Bridgewater, N.S.; grandchildren, Ann,
Michelle, Allyn, Shirley, Kathryn, Colleen, Andrew, James,
Stephen, Noelle, Mary Ann and André; great-grandchildren,
Kristin, David, Markus, Sierra, Logan and Liam; sisters,

Andrew Hamilton, 83, of Waterville, Kings Co., a former
resident of New Victoria died Saturday, July 12, 1986 at the
Kings County Regional Rehabilitiation Centre. Born in
Scotland he was the son of the late Abdre and Mary (Darling)
Hamilton. He was a retired coal miner and a member of Calvin
Unted Church. He is survived by his wife, the former Odette
Dubreq, three daughters Odette (Mrs. Elliott Smith) of New
Victoria, Marion Brown of South Bar, and Antoinette Glover
of Victoria, BC., and by two sisters Ina (Mrs. John Chesal)
of Scotchtown and Mrs. Bella Hart of New Brunswick. There
was no wake. The body was cremated and the remains were
transferred to New Waterford for graveside service which was
conducted by Rev. Dunvan Roach at Union Grove Cemetery in
Scotchtown.

Charles Harding, 86, of MacDonald Street, New Waterford,
passed away Friday, July 15, 2005, at the New Waterford
Hospital. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be

St., New Waterford.
July 18, 2005 - Wilbur Charles Harding, 86, of MacDonald
Street, New Waterford, and a former resident of Toronto,
passed away Friday, July 15, 2005, at the New Waterford
Hospital. Born in Southhampton, England, he was the son of
the late Wilbur Er nest and Ethel (Smith) Harding. Wilbur
was a member of Calvin United Church in New Waterford. For
many years he was employed at a paint company in Ontario. A
quiet man by nature,Wilbur loved fishing but his greatest
pastime was watching the ships coming in and out of Sydney
harbour, especially the cruise ships. He is survived by one
daughter, Bonnie (Gerry) MacIsaac, with whom he resided;
also one son, Tom (Alex), Toronto. Wilbur is survived by his

30/05/2005 - Andrew Simpson Harvey Sr. 74, NEW WATERFORD
Andrew Harvey Sr., age 74, of 9th Street, New Waterford,
passed away Saturday, May 28, 2005, at the New Waterford
Hospital. Born in New Waterford, he as the son of the late
Charles William and Jean (Simpson) Harvey. Andrew was a
devout member of Calvin United Church in New Waterford. He
was the choir director for 25 years and served on several
church committees which included chairman of the Calvin
Board of Stewards, the church building committee and member
of Union Grove Cemetery Committee. Andrew owned and operated
Harvey's Esso Station on Plummer Avenue for over 20 years
and right up until the time of his death was still involved
in the excavation business. He was a former scout leader and
district commissioner for the Boy Scouts of Canada, he
served with the Cape Breton Highlanders Militia and was a
Justice of the Peace. Andrew loved singing and was a former
member of the Cape Breton Chordsmen and the New Waterford
Chorale. He will be remembered as a devoted husband, father
and grandfather. Andrew is survived by his wife, the former
Shirley Gregor; one daughter, Ruth Ann Morrison (Donnie),
Sydney and one son,Andy (Janet) of River Ryan. He is also
survived by two brothers, George (Betty) of Frenchvale and
Charlie of Sydney; five grandchildren, Ian and Jean
Morrison, Allison, Andrew and Keith Harvey, as well as
several nieces and nephews. Andrew was predeceased by two
sisters, Harriet Harvey and Jean Davis. Visitation will take
place today (Monday), 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the V.J.
McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St.,N.W. Funeral service
officiated by Rev. Duncan Roach is on Tuesday, 2 p.m. in
Calvin United Church. Interment in Union Grove Cemetery,
followed by a reception at Calvin. Andrew will be taken to

12/03/2005 - Barbara Loretta Hibbert, 50, of
Scotchtown, passed away Thursday, March 10, 2005, in New
Waterford Hospital. Born in New Waterford, she was the
daughter of Marg (Jacobi) Rizzo, Scotchtown, and the late
Ricardo 'Rick' Rizzo. Barbara was a member of the Salvation
Army,New Waterford, where she was involved in the League of
Mercy. She was a chef and baker who truly enjoyed this line
of work. Barbara was also employed with Harvest House for
three years where she participated in several fundraising
events. She was a counsellor for those who were in detox.
Barbara enjoyed playing darts and sending Christian emails
on her computer. Surviving are her mother, Marg Rizzo,
Scotchtown; husband, Eric 'Louie' Hibbert, Scotchtown; one
son, Devon (Joanne) Hibbert, New Waterford; one brother,
Ricardo (Donna) Rizzo, Scotchtown; and a granddaughter,
Joella. She was predeceased by her father, Ricardo, one
brother, Devon. There will be no visitation. Cremation has
taken place under the direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral
Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. A funeral service will
be held Monday, March 14, at 2 p.m. in the Salvation Army
Citadel with Captains Bradley and Jennifer Reid officiating.
Burial will be in Union Grove Cemetery at a later date.

Johnny Hillier, 58, New Waterford, passed away at the Cape
Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, on April 28, 2009,
surrounded by his loving family. Born in New Waterford,
Johnny was predeceased by his parents, Fred and Doris
(Durdle) Hillier. He was a member of All Saints Anglican
Church, New Waterford. He retired from Lingan Mine. Johnny”s
happiest times have been spent with his true love, Lynn, his
four children and especially his five grandchildren, who he
truly adored. He was a friend to all who loved and knew him.
Johnny fought a courageous battle with a difficult illness
with strength, dignity and perseverance which was surpassed
by none. He loved the outdoors and especially hunting and
fishing with his friends and family. He loved life to the
fullest and will be deeply missed by all who had the
pleasure of knowing him. He is survived by his loving wife,
Lynn (MacDonald) Hillier; two daughters, Kendra (Mr. Ray
Grant), Saint John, N.B., and Erin Beaton, Windsor, N.S.;
two sons, Chris (Antoinette Loro), New Waterford, and

New Waterford - It is with heavy hearts and great sadness
that we the family of Mark William Hulme of 3021 Roaches
Road, New Waterford, announce the passing of our dear
husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend at the New
Waterford Hospital, on January 18, 2005, surrounded by his
loving family after a courageous battle with cancer. Born in
New Waterford, July 1, 1935, he was the son of the late
Charles WIlliam Hulme and Jane (Waidson) Hulme. He was a
member of Calvin United Church. Mark worked in No. 12
Colliery in New Waterford until a mining accident in 1969
left him disabled. His love of life and his family kept him
going. He loved to garden and spend time with his children
and grandchildren. He enjoyed horse racing with his friends
and his love for his CB radio where he was known as "Rusty
Foot". He is survived by his wfie of 49 years Minnie (Gadd)
Hulme, sons Charlie (Bev), Tommy (Edie), both of New
Waterford, Brad (Kathy) of New Brunswick, daughters Gail of
New Waterford, and Donna (Phillip) Milley of Glace bay, one
brother George (Carmel) of New Waterford, sisters Ada
(Courtney) Porter of Guysborough County, Eva (Melvin)
McNeil, Marion (Neil) Donovan, Thelma (Bernie) Doucette,
Diane (Ritchie) Eksal, all of New Waterford, a number of
grandchildren. Mark was predeceased by an infant daughter,
Angel, his parents and a brother Gordon. At his request

Home, passed away Wednesday, June 22, 2005, at the Cove.
Born in New Waterford, she was the daughter of the late
Thomas and Kristene (Neilson) Mikkelsen of Sandfield. Karen
was very active in her church and community. She loved her
grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Karen will be sadly
missed by her four sons and two daughters, Russell (Pearl),
Marion Bridge, Gordon (Elaine), France, Hazel (Paul),
Toronto, David (Ann Marie), Moncton, Kenny (Cathy), Calgary,
and Kathy (Bob), Fredericton; 14 grandchildren; six
great-grandchildren; and brother, George Mikkelsen. She was
predeceased by her stepmother, Christine MacLean, sisters,
Ellen DeWaepenaere, Alvilda Cole, Alma Hanrahan, Alice
Donovan and Ann (in infancy), brothers, Harold, Victor and

Mrs. Milton Jordan of 11 St. Agnes Ave., passed away in St.
Joseph's Hospital Saturday morning. Born in Guysborough, she
was a resident of this community the past 44 years. She was
a member of Calvin United Church and was predeceased by her
husband, the late Milton Jordan. She is survived by four
sons, Carl in New Waterford, Cecil in New Hampshire,
Lawrence in Port Credit, Ontario, and Thomas in Toronto.
She is also survived by three sisters, Miss Margaret Mysner
(Meisner), Mrs. Jack Ross, Florida, and Mrs. Lawrence Barry,
Bedford. Remains are reposing at the V.J. MacGillivray
Funeral Home from where they will be removed to Calvin
United Church at 11 a.m. Monday. Funeral services will be
conducted by Rev. D. K. MacLeod at 2 p.m. in Calvin United
Church. Burial will take place in Union Grove Cemetery,
Scotchtown.
Jordan: The funeral was held on Monday, March 4, at 2 p.m.
from Calvin United Church, New Aterford, of Mrs. Minnie
Jordan, who passed away on Saturday morning, March 2, 1968.

Jardine. Joyce worked for many years for the Town of New
Waterford and Community Services in New Waterford and Glace
Bay, where she retired in 2005. She was a member of Calvin

were spending time with her grandchildren at her cottage in
Mira, attending horse races and hosting Sunday dinners. She

John ‘Butch’ MacKinnon, 67, of Emerald Street,
Scotchtown, passed away suddenly Saturday, June 20, 2009, at
his residence. Butch was born in Inverness and was the son
of the late John and Mary (Odo) MacKinnon. For most of his
life he worked as a mail carrier and also spent a few years
as a truck driver. He enjoyed working many long hours in his
yard and it shows. Butch was a quiet and gentle soul and his
passing leaves an empty space in many hearts. He is survived

James ‘Roddie’ (Sharon), Toronto, Ont.; daughters, Sandra

James. There will be no visitation as cremation has taken
place under the direction of McLellan Brothers Funeral Home,

service will take place Wednesday, June 24 at 2 p.m. in the
McLellan Brother’s Funeral Chapel with Rev. Duncan Roach
officiating. Interment will follow in Union Grove Cemetery
Scotchtown. A luncheon will take place following the service
in the Knights of Columbus Hall 3226 Plummer Ave., New
Waterford, and all are welcome to attend. Donations can be

09/09/2004 - Cape Breton Post - Terrance "Terry" MacKinnon,
65, of 402 King Street, New Waterford, passed away Tuesday,
September 7, 2004 in the Cape Breton Regional Hospital,
Sydney. Born in New Waterford, he was the son of Margaret
(Cloake) MacKinnon of Sarnia, Ontario, and the late Herbert
MacKinnon. Terry was a member of Calvin United Church, New
Waterford. He was employed as a coal miner with DEVCO
working No. 12, No. 26, and Lingan Collieries until his
retirement. He enjoyed fishing and playing tarabish.
Surviving are his wife, Marg (MacLellan) MacKinnon of New
Waterford, daughters Charlene (John) Hashey of Etobicoke,
Ontario, Marlene (Robert "Sam" Currie) MacKinnon of Port
Hawkesbury, Rosanna (Bill Melnick) MacKinnon of Glace Bay,
sisters Audrey (Greg) MacDonald of Dominion, Sheila of
Ontario, grandson Christopher Jennifer) MacKinnon, special
granddaughter Vicki Currie, one great-granddaughter Crystal
Gould. Terry was predeceased by his father, Herbert, brother
Russell, and two children in infancy. Visitation will be
held from 7-9 pm Friday September 10, 2004 in V.J.
McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith Street, New Waterford.
Funeral service will take place Saturday September 11 at 2
pm in Calvin United Church, with Rev. Duncan Roach
officiating. Terry's remains will be taken to the church at
noon on Saturday. Burial will be in Union Grove Cemetery,
Scotchtown. Donations in Terry's memory may be made to a
charity of one's choice.

George Akkusib macLean, 76, 385 Smith Street died Thursday
may 15, 1986 at the Victoria General Hospital in Halifax.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Thomas A. and
Harriett (MacInnis) MacLean. He was employed as a mine
surveyor until his retirement and at one time he was in
charge of the mine resue operations at No. 12 colliery. At
one time he worked with Domco's mine engineering department
and with Acadia Coal Company, Stellarton. He was also a
supervisor with the Cape Breton Steam railway. He was a
member of Calvin Untied Church and belonged to Aberdeen
Lodge of the Independent Order of Oddfellows, Glace Bay.
Survivors include his wife, Bernice (Gregor) MacLean, two
sons Thomas at home and David of Antigonish, a daughter
Eileen of Hamilton, Ontario; two brothers Dr. James of St.
John, NB and Gordon of Whitby, Ontario; a sister Mary (Mrs.
F.R. MacKinnon) of Halifax and one grandchild. A brother,
John redeceased him. The body rested at the V.J. McGillivary
Funeral Home, 380 Smit street. The funeral service ws held
on Sunday at 2 p.m. at Calvin Chrch with intermen in the
Union Grove Cemetery.

announce the passing of Berneice MacLean, 86, of Smith
Street, New Waterford, on April 26, 2009, at the Cape Breton
Regional Hospital, Sydney. Born in New Waterford, she was a
daughter of the late Frank and Ivy (Boldon) Gregor. Berneice
was a member of Calvin United Church, New Waterford. She was
also a member of the choir and an active member of Calvin
United UCW. At one time she was employed at Ferguson Law
Office, the Majestic and Paramount Theatres, and the Value
Center. Surviving are daughter, Eileen (Martin) MacKinnon,
Halifax; sons, Dave (Hinda), Antigonish, Thomas, at home;
brother, Russell Gregor, Hamilton, Ont.; one grandson,
Shaun, Edmonton, Alta. Berneice was predeceased by her
husband, George and one brother, Roy Gregor. There will be
no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the care and
direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St.,
New Waterford. A funeral service will be held 2 p.m.
Thursday, April 30 in Calvin United Church with Rev. Duncan
Roach officiating. Interment will be in Union Grove
Cemetery, Scotchtown with a luncheon to follow at Calvin
Hall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the

15/03/2005 - Cape Breton Post - GEORGE MACNEIL - 100 - New
Waterford - George MacNeil passed away peacefully Saturday,
March 12, 2005, at Maple Hill Manor, surrounded by family
and friends. George was in his centenarian year. Born in
Dominion, George was the son of John P. MacNeil and Mary
Anne (MacPherson) MacNeil. George started his working career
at the age of 12 as a coal miner in No. 16 Colliery, New
Waterford. A mine accident in his early years sidelined
George, forcing him to operate his family farm to provide
for his wife and children. George and Mary Katherine
together raised 17 children both in Cape Breton and later in
Ontario. George's career changed in Ontario where he worked
as a meat packer and later, as a road worker until his
retirement from the Mississauga Township. After Mary
Katherine's passing in 1974, George moved back to Cape
Breton Island to continue his retirement. George was
admitted to the extended care unit at New Waterford Hospital
and subsequently to Maple Hill Manor where he enjoyed
wonderful care with his new family of friends. Surviving are
his daughters, Edna Howard , Caroline (George) Cor mier,
Hilda Jonathan (Ernie) Blundell and Linda Ann (Howard)
Cunnington, all of Ontario, Margaret Clay MacNeil, Bedford,
N.S.; sons, Sherman Joel (Janet), William Joseph (Wilma),
David Cutler (Judy), Timothy Lee, Issac Luther (Janice),
Howard Kenneth (Elaine) , all of Ontario, Robert Clarence
(Cathy), New Victoria, N.S., Dana Ross (Marg), Prince Edward
Island. Surviving also are 31 grandchildren; 30
greatgrandchildren; and eight greatgreat-grandchildren;
sisters, Christine (Charlie) Floyd, Kelowna, B.C., Sadie
Kennedy,Gardiner Mines; and brother, Paddy MacNeil, New
Waterford. Besides his wife and parents, George was
predeceased by sons, Charlie George, John Myers and Sheldon
Steward, daughter, Edith Caroline, two grandsons, brothers,
Michael, Leo, Martin and Neil, sisters, Mary Lizzie,
Elizabeth (Betty), Florence and Mable, brotherin-law, Neil
Kennedy, as well as his special friend and companion, Mamie
Cecilia Rice. Visitation for the late George MacNeil will
take place from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, March 16, at
McLellan Brothers Funeral Home 3183 Plummer Ave.,New
Waterford.Funeral service will be held Thursday, March 17,
at 11 a.m. in the Salvation Army Citadel with Captains
Bradley and Jennifer Reid officiating. Cremation to follow
with burial at a later date. There will be a reception
following the funeral service in the Salvation Army Hall.

85, Scotchtown/Halifax Josephine 'Jo' MacNevin, lifelong
resident of Scotchtown, passed away peacefully at the home
of her daughters in Halifax on Jan. 14, 2009. Born in New
Waterford, she was the daughter of Joseph Blaha
(Czechoslovakia) and Catherine Koval Blaha (Poland). She was
an adherent of Calvin United Church and a retired nurse with
30 years service. One of her fondest memories was leading
the class at Central High School from which she graduated in
1941. She completed her training at the New Waterford
General Hospital and obtained her RN in 1945. Jo is fondly
remembered by former patients for her kindness and empathy.
A proponent of lifelong learning, she was an avid reader and
student of English history. In 1991 at the age of 68, having
survived a bout of cancer, she achieved a lifelong goal by
obtaining her bachelor of arts degree (University College of
Cape Breton). She will be sadly missed by her son, David
(Ruth) MacNevin, Ottawa; daughters, Barbara (MacNevin)
White, Audrey (Roger Howse) MacNevin, Halifax, and Eileen
(Steve Page) MacNevin, Scarborough; grandchildren, Logan
(Cheryl) White, Sean White, Paul MacNevin, Ottawa, Kathryn
and Parnell Davis-MacNevin and Graham and Eleanor MacNevin-Page,
Scarborough; great-grandchildren, Colton and Julia White.
She was predeceased by her husband of 51 years, Alcorn
MacNevin, brother, Joseph Blaha, sister, Mary (Blaha) Hornig
and grandson, Matthew Reid MacNevin. Graveside service will
take place in August at Union Grove Cemetery. In lieu of
flowers, donations may be made to the Salvation Army.
